Cooking Challenge Reunion!

This weekend I had to pleasure to head back to New Zealand for a few days and meet up with my old cooking buddies. I stayed with my friends Kevin and Haej in their beautiful Seatoun home. My first night there, I made a some gnocchi and we had a little wine while we caught up. The next night, I had a lonnnnnng evening out on the town. Went to a new bar called Apartment which is designed after a New York apartment. There is even a room with a bed in it, which I had the pleasure of watching a drunk couple awkwardly groping each other on. Note to bars, if you don’t want people to do disgusting things in your establishment, don’t put a bed in the middle of the room.
Annnyways, on Sunday we decided to get the band back together and kick the food challenge up a notch. This time we decided to assign a photo from Foodporn.com to each person, and we had to recreate the dish without a recipe or even a name of the dish. We tried to choose pictures that were a bit ambiguous, so as to make the challenge, well… a bit more of a challenge. The results were quite successful. Everyone’s food turned out delicious and it was really nice to cook together again. Here are some photos of the days events:
My Asian-Inspired Chicken Noodle Soup on the left…. Actual Thai Coconut Curry Soup on right.
Derrick’s Squid Ceviche Surprise on the left… Actual Poblano and Bacon Corn Pudding w/ Tomatillo Salsa on right.
Haej’s Chicken and Olive Crouton on left… Actual Turkey Olive Bread Pudding w/ Slow Roasted Tomatoes on the right. I think Haej wins for most like the actual dish in every way.
Kevin’s Quinoa-Crab Delite on left… Actual King Crab, Papaya, and Quinoa w/ Citrus Vinaigrette on left.
Jance tried his hand at his first cooking challenge. We gave him Jambalaya to make and he did great!
